REPUTATION FOR INNOVATION

AT BARNSLEY COLLEGE IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE, HAIRDRESSING STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK ALONGSIDE CELEBRITY HAIRDRESSER ANDREW BARTON

Rated ‘Outstanding’, Barnsley College has a deserved reputation for innovation, with senior leaders allowing heads of department to think outside the box in terms of delivery. High quality teaching is delivered by highly skilled, knowledgeable staff who ensure their learners develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours that will give them the best chance of future employment. Consequently, the college’s retention, pass and achievement rates are always significantly above the national average – 97% in the 2018/19 academic year.

A full time hairdressing course requires three days a week in college, split between studying theory in a traditional classroom and developing practical skills in the college’s on-site commercial salons. The salons come equipped with touch screen tutor computers and folding tables, as quite often practical and theory sit together. All hairdressing students also take part in valuable work placements, experience and volunteering programmes.

Hairdressing students at Barnsley College can also study ABLE – a training programme created by award-winning hairdresser (and former Barnsley College alumnus) Andrew Barton, designed to improve skill sets and longterm employability. ABLE students get to work alongside Andrew on a series of demo days, share his career story and experiences and accompany him on day trips out to other learning institutions around the country.

Now in its second year of running at Barnsley, ABLE has led to an increase in the number of apprentices and salon employers choosing to work with the college.

Says Julie Allen, Barnsley College’s Curriculum Leader in Hair and Beauty: “Our hairdressing learners who study ABLE alongside their qualification have enjoyed the opportunities to work alongside Andrew. He is extremely inspirational and always has plenty of advice and tips for our students for their future careers.”
