AN APPRENTICESHIP AT ANDREW COLLINGE IS HIGHLY PRIZED
Andrew Collinge has hairdressing in his blood: his family has been running hairdressing salons since 1954 and his late father, Peter, was awarded an OBE for services to hairdressing in 2012. As well as running upmarket salons in and around the Liverpool area, the business also focuses heavily on education and training, with an Apprenticeship programme that’s widely acknowledged as a leader within the industry.
“We train around 70 apprentices throughout the year,” says Andrew. “Around 10 of those will go on to full employment (complete with contract) within our own business, but we also train on behalf of partner salons around the UK.
“Our approach to hairdressing training is to build a solid foundation of understanding the theories of hairdressing mixed with some great practical opportunities. For example, our Apprentices work in specially kitted-out hairdressing training salons while they gain their Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals and then we have two Andrew Collinge Graduate Salons, where newly qualified hairdressers can build up a clientele of their own while working towards their Advanced Apprenticeship hairdressing qualification. In our eyes, practical, hands-on experience is key to good vocational learning.
“Ninety per cent of our employees did their training within the company, and we try and make sure that people who work for us have clear opportunities to progress. For example, we set goals in terms of client retention and productivity that provide a framework for moving up the ranks from Stylist to Senior Stylist then Style Director and, ultimately, Senior Style Director – at all times with a guaranteed wage and commission rates. Equally, there are opportunities to transition into salon management or education as an in-salon tutor. All of this is managed via regular consultation with our employees to ensure they’re happy and motivated.
“There are opportunities to develop creatively too, such as assisting the Andrew Collinge Creative Team on shoots and shows, and the top prize in our annual Creative Stylist Awards is a photo-shoot with a top London photographer.”
